Quick Guide to GPS Systems

By admin

If you’ve heard of automotive GPS systems, then you’ve heard of Garmin, Magellan, and Tom Tom. These are the three big companies in the marketplace. And the collectively control about 90% of the market share. Their products all have their strengths and weaknesses, however.

Although Magellan was the original GPS company, Garmin took away a large part of their market share through excellent engineering and a commitment to quality. They’ve marketed themselves as the high-end company, and the results have paid off. Garmin now owns about 50% of the U. S. market.

Tom Tom, a European company, is a recent arrival on the GPS scene. Just as Garmin did before them, they’ve taken away market share from Garmin and Magellan. Garmin is still by far the top seller in the U. S., with Tom Tom and Magellan each spliting about 40% of the rest of the market.

So, if you want a GPS, and you want to go with the industry leader, Garmin is the company to choose. Having said that, let’s take a brief look at their product line.

What I want to do now, is to give you an overview of their product line, what their systems can do and about how much they cost.

All automotive GPS systems can do the following. They can show you where you are on electronic maps and tell you how to get where you’re going with voice prompts. They also have a pre-programmed database of destinations (called Points of Interest), and a few other bells and whistles.

Garmin’s entry level device, the nuvi 200, can do all of this and more. What’s cool is that at the time of this writing, the nuvi 200 sells for less than $150. Now, the nuvi 200 can do more than just the basics. It can double as a digital picture viewer and an audio book reader, for instance.

A lot of people, however, want more. Let’s see what else you can get with a little more money.

Basic GPS systems don’t tell you the street names when they tell you where to turn. That takes a more advanced, and more expensive, system. The Garmin nuvi 350 has what’s called Text-to-Speech, that is it actually tells you the street name. It also sells for about $200.

Other upgrades you can get are Bluetooth capability, real-time traffic and weather, multi-point routing, and a wider screen. For a few bucks more than the nuvi 350, you can get the nuvi 360, which has Bluetooth. It’s got the smaller 3.5-inch screen, however. If you want Bluetooth and the larger screen, you’ll have to go with the Garmin nuvi 660.

If you really want to shoot the proverbial moon, then the Garmin 880 might be just the ticket. It’s got voice recognition! Which is really cool. It’s got a cool price, too. Right now it sells for around $900. But if you want a state of the art GPS, then look no further than the nuvi 880.

I just got an xbox 360, this is my first xbox system can u give me a quick guide to using an xbox 360?
Tell me whats the difference between core and premium pack. Should i swap it for a ps3?

2

Premium vs. Core:
1. 400 vs. 300
2. 20 gb hard drive vs. none
3. Wireless controller out of the box vs. wired controller out of the box.
4. Silver trim tray vs. regular white tray
5. Composite-component cable vs. composite cable
6. White box vs. green box

What do you want to know about using the 360? Games to get? Gears of War, Dead Rising, Dead or Alive 4, Crackdown if you want the Halo 3 Beta invitation, Fight Night Round 3, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 1 & 2.

Whether or not you want to swap it for a PS3 is up to you. Look at the games that are available exclusively to each system and what each system has to offer, then make your decision based on that. Also look into X-Box Live vs. Sony Online if you’re interested in playing online with or against other players.

Premium costs more. Depending on the shop where you buy, the prices for a premium System are from $350 to $399 compared to the $299 for a core system.

Furthermore, you get the following in a premium package:
A harddisk. You absolutely need it if you want to play Xbox 1 games or want to try game demos or watch high definition download movies from the marketplace. Although a 512 MB Memory unit is announced, demos are usually between 600MB and 1 GB.

A wireless controller. Core only gets a wired controller.

A headset for Xbox Live communication. Core won’t have this.

Premium has a combined high def. / Standard def. cable, that has component as well as composite connectors.
Core only has standard composite cabling.

The premium also has a chrome finish on the drive tray. Core only has a grey/white plastic tray.

And lastly (I don’t know if the core also has this, as I bought the premium) you will get 1 month of free Xbox Live Gold membership for up to 5 Gamertags on your Xbox.

So all in all, its (according to Microsofts Xbox Website) a saving of about $279 if you bought a premium instead of going core and buying the accessories later on.

Regarding your PS3 question: It depends on if you are satisfied with the PS3.
If you can play the games you like, and connect it to your PC to play Movies, pictures and MP3s from the PC on your console great. The Xbox 360 does that, too. It even can replace the music in a game with your MP3s.

If you have a Media Center PC with a TV card, you can even watch TV and recorded TV shows with the Xbox like a Video Recorder.

The Xbox has a better Multiplayer management in my opinion. With the Live system you will get a small message in your game if one of your friends signs on. You can then push the guide button and see what your friends are playing and then join their game if you want, even if they are playing completely different games.

The PS3 users will only see friends that play exactly the same games.
