Marine GPS - What You Should Know
ByNo doubt you’ve heard of auto GPS or even handheld GPS systems, but you may not be aware that marine GPS units also exist. GPS stands for “Global Positioning System.” This system is basically a set of satellites. They go around the world two times a day, and they transmit information on location and time. They communicate with marine GPS units and other types of GPS units to help you find your location or easily find out how to get to another location. For those who are planning trips out on the water, marine GPS units are definitely a wonderful option.
For thousands of years, many seafarers traveling out on the sea have used the stars as a guide. However, today you can use marine GPS units to help you find your way. Marine GPS units allow you to see exactly where you are and to find where you need to go. Even excellent mariners have got lost out on the water, so having great marine GPS units can definitely be a great idea and it is an essential part of your gear that you should take along when you go out on the water.
If you are going to purchase marine GPS units, then there are a variety of things you need to know. If you are going to spend a lot of money on the marine GPS units, then you’ll definitely want to make sure it comes with many features. Figure out whether or not these are features you need. If the GPS units have more features than you really need to have, then it’s a better idea to go with a model that is less costly and that only has the features that you really need. It’s also a great idea to compare the prices of marine GPS units before buying so you get a great idea.
Not only will you find that marine GPS units are excellent for those that travel out on the water, but they are excellent for fishermen as well. These units not only help you out with location, but many of them help to locate where the fish are as well. They offer information on where the best fishing spots are, so you can find where the best fishing is going to be. While you’ll find that these marine GPS units are pretty pricey, if you are fishing for a living, they can definitely be worth the price that you will pay.
When you are looking for marine GPS units, you’ll find that there are many great choices out there today. Take a look at local sporting goods stores or perhaps take a look on the internet. No doubt you’ll find that there are many varieties for you to choose from. It’s a great idea to do some research before purchasing marine GPS units. Find out about the best companies, the features you need, and of course know what you can spend. Together these things can help you to make the right choice out of all the excellent marine GPS units that are available.

Should I go into the Marine Corps Reserve system for these reasons?
I am 23 years old and looking to join the marine corp reserves for a couple of reasons.
One is I am currently going to school full time and starting to see my debt levels rise very quickly. So going into the reserve’s would hopefully help me pay for school and offer a little income to help out.
Two. This may seem like a crazy reason but I have always been out of shape and have lost weight here and there. I have constantly tried to lose all my weight and usually lose 20-50 lbs but never get down to what i need to be. I can lose enough weight to meet the standards and then the Marines should be able to help me get into great shape. So this is another reason I am interested in joining.
three. I have kind of always wanted to be a marine. Although a reservist probably wont feel like a full fledge Marine, it seems the next best thing.
I havent talked to a recruiter yet because I am still thinking about it and i dont need the added pressure of the recruiter trying to hurry an enlistment. Also I am majoring in Accounting and would like to get an MOS around that field if possible. Does anyone know if that is possible? I have started to read that you can only get assigned an MOS that is available in a reserve unit near where you live. Is this true? If so is there any way to see whats available online at all?
Thanks.
I would like to add some things. First there are many marines who join for other reasons besides serving their country and our marine corps numbers would be down if we cut out the people who dont join for that reason. How many people join to go overseas or join just to get away from home? And I am sure these Marines who joined under these reasons still became great Marines who serve their country well and I dont think I should feel bad for joining the Marines for some other reasons…
With that said I do understand the risk of being called up and serving my country and I think i can handle that. I come from a line of Marines and I have always looked up to my dad, brother, and other relatives who have joined with admiration. So I can see how some of my reasons look very selfish and they may be to some degree, but I would love the opportunity to serve my country as well.

Those are terrible reasons to become a Marine. You are not suitable to be a Marine, you should join the Navy.

As long as you are emotionally prepared to go overseas, or wherever, for battle, money for school is a great reason to join the reserves.

If you’re prepared to sacrifice part or even all of your life for the US Armed Forces, I would say that you can go ahead and try. But if your primary reasons are to pay off bills and get in shape, then there are other ways of getting it done without committing such a large part of your life (as a reserve Marine, you will always have to be ready to be called).
It seems like you want to join more for yourself than your country. If serving the public is not on your radar at all, I would say search for solutions elsewhere.

Ace,
Excellent reasons to go reserves. True that you can only get a job based on the reserve station near you as there are only so many openings. However, what is keeping you from going active duty? You can get into finance and accounting, go to college at night (free) and then have a career doing what you wanted or get out and do something else. If you don’t want to go to war remember that there aren’t a whole lot of finance guys doing the shooting. You are making sure the trigger pullers are getting paid.
Don’t mess with the reserves, go active. 4 years screams by and at the end you can be in good shape, be debt free, and have a degree in whatever you decide.
Best of luck

Don’t expect a lot of money to come from the reserves. As a non vet you’ll get like 329ish a month from the select reserve gi bill, plus around 180-200 from drill pay.
If you plan on enlisting you better lose that weight and keep it off, or you’ll be hurting. The Marines tighted regs around weight and appearance. Not to mention bootcamp will be all the tougher and you’ll stand out more.
Reservists are full fledged Marines.
You can drill at any drill center that has an open slot for your mos. I had a guy drilling with my unit who lived 9 hours away. Heres a link so you can see what units are around you.
